Implementation of ISO 19650:2 for corporate real estate

Scope of Work Problem Statement from the Client

The client is embarking on the construction of a commercial building project, but faces a significant challenge. A lack of awareness and understanding among stakeholders about ISO19650 processes, documentation requirements, and the Common Data Environment (CDE) is hindering the project's progress. The client's overarching objective is to establish a comprehensive digital framework for the project, leveraging cutting-edge innovative technologies. However, the current knowledge gap in ISO19650 and digital construction practices poses a major obstacle to achieving this goal. Addressing this issue is crucial for the successful implementation of a digital framework and the efficient execution of the commercial building project

Scope of Work

The solution provided to meet the goal and requirements of the client was DPM, BIM 4D & 5D Consulting Service and Implementation of ISO 19650 Part 02.

Why ISO 19650

  • Standardization: ISO 19650 Part 2 provides a standardized framework for managing information throughout the lifecycle of built assets. This standardization ensures that all stakeholders involved in a construction project or asset management have a common set of guidelines and processes to follow.
  • Efficiency: It promotes efficient information management practices, including the creation, sharing, and maintenance of digital documents and data. This efficiency can lead to cost savings and improved project timelines.
  • Collaboration: ISO 19650 Part 2 emphasizes collaborative working, enabling various project participants to work together seamlessly. This is crucial in complex construction projects where multiple parties, such as architects, engineers, contractors, and owners, need to coordinate their efforts.
  • Risk Reduction: By defining clear processes for information management and documentation, ISO 19650 Part 2 helps reduce the risk of errors, omissions, and disputes. Proper documentation and information exchange can prevent costly rework and legal issues.
  • Data Integrity: It ensures the integrity of digital information by specifying requirements for metadata, version control, and security. This is critical for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of project data.

In summary, ISO 19650 Part 2 is important because it sets the groundwork for efficient, standardized, and collaborative information management practices in construction projects, which ultimately contributes to project success.

ISO 19650:2

During Detail design Phase

  • Implement the ISO19650 framework like File naming convention, CDE, BEP, and TIDP.
  • Setup the Common data environment in ACC.
  • Setup the review workflow mechanism.
  • Setup the automatic process to run the clash test with all the disciplines.
  • Coordinate with all the stakeholders to break down the model as per the work breakdown structure.
  • Coordinate with all the stakeholders to add the WBS unique ids to all the elements.
  • 4D and 5D Simulation.

During the Construction Phase

  • Track the project planned vs actual work with developed 4D & 5D BIM models.
  • Implement the Reality capture technology to bring the actual work and as-built conditions from the site.
  • Capture the as-built Progress periodically with the laser scanners.
  • Update the BIM models as per as-built Scanned data.

Key Challenges

All the stakeholders were new to the ISO 19650 framework and it was challenging to bring them on the same page.

How we solved the problem

Solution: First we created detailed documentation EIR, CDE, File Naming Convention, BEP, TIDP, BIM assessment forms, and other documents. We conducted multiple workshops to explain and clear all the queries of stakeholders.

Selecting and Linking the 3d model to all the activities was quite challenging and the project schedule.

Solution: First we broke down the schedule to one more level in WBS for better virtual construction simulation and tracking. A unique WBS ID was generated and assigned to the 3d elements, this activity saved a lot of time in linking the model to the project schedule for virtual construction simulation.

Breaking down the BIM model to match the project schedule Work breakdown structure was challenging for certain 3d elements.

Solution: The work breakdown structure was shared with all the stakeholders and workshops to explain how the model has to be developed in line with the work breakdown structure for better simulation and tracking of project progress.

ISO 19650 File Naming Convention

Outcome or how the client got benefitted

  • The entire digital framework was set up in Autodesk construction cloud as per ISO19650.
  • A common data environment helped all the stakeholders to get the right information from the right place to the right person.
  • Enforcing the File naming convention to the CDE folder structure
  • Project schedule validation through 4D simulation as part of the integrated baseline review and the constructability issues.
  • The 4D and 5D models helped them to track the project's progress in terms of time and cost.
  • Conducting periodic LiDAR surveys helped clients to bring the actual work executed for planned vs actual tracking and updating the models as per scanned data. In the end, models are updated as per executed.
  • Early detection of execution errors through laser scanning prevented cost saving and helped to complete the project on time.

Deliverables provided

  • Digital framework as per ISO19650.
